Stuttering: A Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Perspective

WORKSHOP I.
The Impact of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity on Developmental Stuttering
Dr. Kia Noelle Johnson

Continuous growth in cultural and linguistic diversity within the United States influences service delivery to children from diverse backgrounds. Research findings and clinical observations indicate differences in the presentation of speech disfluencies as well as related behaviors in culturally/linguistically diverse individuals. Together, these factors motivate a need to consider the impact of cultural and linguistic diversity on developmental stuttering and its influence on clinical decision making. This session will discuss cultural differences and considerations for stuttering as well as how to adjust assessment protocols to be more culturally responsive. (.15 CEUs)

WORKSHOP II.
NSA Miami Chapter Panel
Moderated by Dr. Angela Medina

The purpose of this panel is to describe the purpose, function, and outcomes of stuttering support groups for children and adults who stutter, their families, and speech-language pathologists. Dr. Medina will present research findings on the benefits of stuttering support groups and then facilitate a panel discussion with 4 members of the Miami stuttering support group chapter. Topics will include barriers and facilitators of support group participation, the role of stuttering support groups in speech therapy, and personal reflections of stuttering support group experiences. (.10 CEUs)

Learning Outcomes
Summarize research findings related to cultural and linguistic diversity and stuttering.
Provide examples of ways in which cultural and linguistic diversity can impact the presentation of core and secondary behaviors of stuttering.
Describe at least one way in which service-delivery can be adapted to be more culturally responsive.

Course Completion Requirements
Participants will have successfully completed the course if they attended the 1.5-hour session and/or the 1 hour 15-minute panel presentation and submitted the ASHA CEU course evaluation form.
